The School
Hill Springs Academy is a private Christian school that was founded in 1997. There are approximately eight school buildings throughout the TMD campus with plans for expansion as the attendance continues to climb. The classrooms typically hold between 30 and 50 and there are 20 teachers and administrators on staff. The school performs extremely well compared to Kenyan public schools and, in fact, is used as a model by the local school board. However, the classrooms are very sparse due to the limited resources and the great number of children that are attending. Even so, the school is so popular that 400 children attend, many of whom walk miles just to have this opportunity to learn.
Tuition is about $100 annually, not including the cost of a required school uniform. That is a huge sum of money in western Kenya. Many of the children are only able to attend because of scholarships that the Oasis/TMD partnership provides. These children want to make a better life for themselves and are very committed to learning. Our dream is for the level of excellence to continue to grow so that these children and others will have hope for a better future.
